(London, Ontario) – On Wednesday afternoon in Leduc, Alberta, the Fanshawe Women's Curling team won the 2018 CCAA Curling National Championship with a 5-4 extra end victory over Camosun College. This is the Fanshawe Women's Curling program's fourth consecutive year that they have won a CCAA medal.
The Falcons were the first to score, recording two in the opening end. Camosun came back to tie the game in the 3rd end, and neither team would score again until the 8th frame when the Falcons took a 4-2 lead. Camosun responded with one in the 9th end and stole another in the 10th to force an extra end. With the hammer, Fanshawe skip Kaitlyn Poirier (Sioux Lookout, ON) made the takeout on their final rock of the 11th end to score one and defeat the Chargers 5-4 to win the National Gold Medal. Poirier was phenomenal in the Final. Fanshawe finished their tournament with an impressive 8-1 record.
The Fanshawe Women's team is comprised of skip Poirier, vice Erin White (Chatham, ON), second Samantha Lees (St. Thomas, ON), lead Isabelle Allan (Carp, ON) and alternate Angelica Muscedere (Bright's Grove, ON). The Head Coach is Barry Westman and the Associate Coach is Shirley Westman.
The Falcons Men's Curling team claimed the CCAA Silver Medal, dropping their Final by a score of 7-3 against the undefeated and top ranked Douglas Royals. Fanshawe fell behind early, but were able to regroup and tie the game at two. Douglas made the score 3-2 after the 6th end, followed by a steal of four in the 7th that would prove too much for Fanshawe to overcome. Despite their best efforts, the Falcons would drop a 7-3 decision.
The Men's team is made up of skip Charlie Richard (Woodstock, ON), vice Logan James (Brantford, ON), second Tyler Twining (Owen Sound, ON), lead Brady St. Louis (St. Mary's, ON), and alternate Brandon Twining (Owen Sound, ON). Their Head Coach is DJ Ronaldson. James and St. Louis were named CCAA Tournament All-Stars.
