(London, ON) - Fanshawe men's basketball (1-3) hosted Humber (3-0) on Saturday afternoon at Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre, dropping the game 74-71 in a nail-biter.
This game had fast-paced action throughout in what was one of the most exciting basketball games a spectator could ask for. Brandon Bogart (St. Thomas, ON) was hot from the jump, picking up 11 of the Falcons 17 points in the quarter on 4/7 shooting. Fanshawe found themselves down 18-17 going into the second frame.
In the second quarter Fanshawe's Kuol Kuol (London, ON) started to get more aggressive with his scoring. Coming off a 15 point performance in their win against Canadore, Kuol continued his steady scoring, dropping 16 points on 50% shooting for the night. Both teams continued to trade blows in the second quarter and the Falcons were down just three, 37-34 against the defending CCAA National Champions heading into the second half.
In the third quarter Fanshawe was able to erase the slim three point deficit to even the game at 50-50 going into the fourth quarter. Bogart continued his hot scoring, collecting seven of his team high 22 points in the third quarter.
Tied at 50 apiece at the start of the final quarter, the drama in the battle of the birds continued. After a Humber run saw the Hawks up 10 points with five minutes remaining, Fanshawe resonded with timely three-point shooting to make the score 71-69 with 35 second left. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Humber's Malik Grant took the game over in the fourth by scoring 18 points and hit a three pointer with 10 seconds left to put the score out of reach. In an absoluter thriller of a game, Fanshawe fell 74-71.
Despite the tough loss this was a measuring stick performance that proved Fanshawe can compete with the best teams in the OCAA. The Falcons will look to build off this performance as they play their next two games on the road before returning to Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre for a Wednesday night matchup against Lambton (3-0) at 8:00 p.m.
