(London, ON) - Fanshawe women's basketball (2-1) hosted Humber (3-0) on Saturday afternoon at Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre, falling by a score of 61-48.
This game was highlighted by lots of defensive plays on both ends. The defensive tone was set early for the Falcons by Sidney Deleary (Chippewas of the Thames), who collected a steal and a block in the first frame. Fanshawe's offense stalled early however, being outscored by Humber 17-11 in the opening quarter.
The second quarter saw much of the same, both teams forcing turnovers and difficult shots. This time it was Edith Eseme (Milton, ON) causing havoc in passing lanes, picking up three of her five steals in the second quarter. The Falcons still trailed going into the second half by nine points, 32-23.
Fanshawe was able to pick up their offensive play in the third quarter, led by Layla MacKenzie (Camlachie, ON) who dropped nine of her 18 points in the quarter on 4/5 shooting. This continues MacKenzie's three game streak of scoring 15+ points to open the 2025-26 season. The Falcons managed to cut the lead to 45-38 going into the final frame.
The fourth quarter started with a big 11-2 run by Humber to create a deficit too large for Fanshawe to comeback from. Despite a strong effort, the Falcons fell by a score of 61-48.
Fanshawe's women's basketball team will play their next two games on the road before returning to Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre for a Wednesday night matchup against Lambton (2-0), at 6:00 p.m.
