(London, ON) – The Fanshawe Falcons women's basketball team (7-2) kickstarted their second-semester schedule against the Sheridan Bruins (2-7) at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Wednesday night. Picking up right where they left off before the break, the Falcons dominated the Bruins 89-32 to extend their win streak to four games.
Fanshawe set the tone early, jumping out to a 14-2 run in the opening minutes of the first quarter. Layla MacKenzie (Camlachie, ON), who finished with 14 points on the night, led the way with six in the opening frame. Despite the early surge from the Falcons, Sheridan battled back to tighten the score to 27-15 in favour of Fanshawe after one quarter.
That would be as close as the Bruins would get, as the Birds' suffocating defence proved too much to solve. Highlighted by seven steals from Sidney Deleary (Chippewa of the Thames), Fanshawe forced 32 turnovers and held Sheridan to under 10 points in each of the second, third, and fourth quarters. The Falcons opened the second frame with a 19-0 run and carried a commanding 46-21 lead into halftime.
The bleeding did not stop for Sheridan in the second half, as Fanshawe continued to score at will while allowing little on the defensive end. The Falcons cruised through the final two quarters to close out the Bruins, 89-32. The Falcons showed tremendous teamwork, having 33 assists on 34 made field goals, and every active player scoring in the contest. The Falcons also set a new team Fanshawe Women's Basketball record for most blocks in a game with 12 total.
Ashlyn Anderson (Latchford, ON) continued her dominant season for the Falcons, recording her sixth double-double of the year with a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds, while adding four blocks. Deleary was equally impactful, showcasing her versatility with nine assists, which ties a Fanshawe Women's Basketball record of most assists in a game, and eight points to go along with her defensive performance. Edith Eseme (Milton, ON) also matched a career-high with 14 points in the victory.
The Falcons will look to extend their win streak to five games on Wednesday, January 14, in a key road matchup against the Humber Hawks (7-2), with second place in the OCAA West Division standings on the line. Fanshawe's next victory would also mark the 200th regular-season win in head coach Bill Carriere's illustrious Hall of Fame career.
