(London, ON) – The Falcons women's basketball team (8-3, 3rd West) welcomed Conestoga (4-7, 6th West) to the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Thursday night and triumphed over the visiting Condors by a score of 54-38. The win marked a milestone moment for Fanshawe women's basketball head coach Bill Carriere, as it was the 200th OCAA regular-season victory of his Hall of Fame career.
The Falcons flexed their trademark lockdown defence early, putting Conestoga in a straitjacket for the entire first half. While the Falcons' offence wasn't clicking on all cylinders, it didn't matter, as they held the Condors to 2-of-15 shooting from the field in the opening frame. A six-point scoring burst from Jaimie Stahlbaum (Aylmer, ON) led the way offensively for Fanshawe, as they finished the first quarter ahead 16-5.
The second quarter told a similar story, as the Falcons once again limited Conestoga to just two made baskets, holding them to 2-of-19 shooting in the period. Fanshawe was dominant on the glass as well, outrebounding the Condors 60-47 in the game, highlighted by 17 rebounds from Ashlyn Anderson (Latchford, ON). Anderson, the Falcons' double-double machine, picked up her eighth of the season, finishing with 10 points, three assists, three steals, and three blocks. The Falcons entered halftime with a commanding 31-9 lead.
The second half saw a more spirited effort from the Condors, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome. Despite Conestoga outscoring Fanshawe in both the third and fourth quarters, the Falcons had no trouble closing out the game while making full use of their bench depth. Thirteen Falcons saw action on the night, with nine recording at least one field goal, including Ella Zachary (Sault Ste. Marie, ON), who knocked down a three-pointer in the fourth quarter. The basket marked Zachary's first career point as a Falcon, as the second-year guard made her long-anticipated OCAA regular season debut after battling back from a rookie-season injury. Fanshawe closed out the victory with a final score of 54-38.
The Falcons will have one day to rest before returning to the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Saturday, January 24, for Falcons Fest. The women's basketball team will tip off the festivities at 1:00 p.m. against the Redeemer Royals (2-9, 8th West).
