Falcons Women's Basketball Open Falcons Fest With a Big Victory
The Falcons women’s basketball team (9-3, 3rd West) took on the Redeemer Royals (2-10, 9th West) in front of an excited Falcons Fest crowd at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Saturday afternoon.
(London, ON) – The Falcons women's basketball team (9-3, 3rd West) took on the Redeemer Royals (2-10, 9th West) in front of an excited Falcons Fest crowd at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Saturday afternoon. The women's basketball team got the day going with a resounding 69-46 victory over the visiting Royals.
The Falcons got off to a hot start in the first quarter, with Ashlyn Anderson (Latchford, ON) setting the tone early by scoring seven points in the frame to lead all Fanshawe scorers. Anderson has been on a tear this season and dominated the contest with her efficiency, finishing the night tied for the team lead with 17 points on 6/9 shooting. She also tallied four blocks, four assists, and 13 rebounds for yet another double-double. Fanshawe carried a 20-13 lead into the second quarter.
Fanshawe continued to roll in the second, outscoring Redeemer 16-12. The Falcons' defence was locked in during the first half, limiting the Royals to just eight made field goals. The Birds took a 36-25 lead into halftime.
The second half opened with Layla MacKenzie (Camlachie, ON) lighting the lamp, knocking down two three-pointers in the third quarter. MacKenzie finished with 17 points, highlighted by five made threes in the contest. Fanshawe's teamwork was on display, as the Falcons assisted on over half of their made field goals. Karyn TeBrake (Ottawa, ON) led all Birds with five assists. Fanshawe held a 20-point lead heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Fanshawe gave the bench extended minutes with the outcome never in doubt. The Falcons closed out the game with a 69-46 win, getting Falcons Fest off to a strong start in front of the home crowd.
The Falcons will now be off until Friday, January 30, when they take a short trip down Highway 22 for a rivalry matchup against the Lambton Lions (4-8, 6th West) at 6:00 p.m.
