Falcons Fall Short Against the Undefeated Saints
(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Falcons Women's Volleyball team (1-5) fell to the No. 2 Provincially ranked St. Clair Volleyball team (5-0) at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Saturday afternoon.
It was a back-and-forth affair Saturday between the Falcons and St. Clair. The first set saw the two teams trade points back and forth as Fanshawe was led by excellent service play receiving aces from Dana Sloan (London, ON) and Jamie Worsfold (Dorchester, ON). However, despite holding a lead late into the set, St. Clair battled back and took the first by a score of 25-21.
The second set was much of the same for both squad as neither team could contain a lead. Fanshawe was led by Grace McLean (Dorchester, ON), who was aggressive at the net, soaring for multiple kills to help the Birds battle back from a multi-point deficit to regain the lead. However, after a lengthy rally won by St. Clair to tie the set at 17, the Saints stayed aggressive and took the second by a score of 25-21.
The third set saw the Falcons get their wings from underneath them as McLean continued to lead the charge, as she finished her night with a team high 15 kills. She was helped greatly by Ari Peake (London, ON) in the set as she chipped in with multiple points in the third. The Falcons net defence was staunch at the end of the set, as back-to-back blocks saw the Falcons claim a late lead and later secure the set by a score of 25-20.
The Falcons continued their momentum in the fourth set as they got out to an early 10-4 lead. Unfortunately, the Saints wanted no part of a fifth set and went on an 11-0 run to take the lead 15-10. St. Clair never looked back, and the Birds dropped the final set 25-17, ultimately falling in the match 3-1.
The Falcons will be back on the road for their next games as they will travel to Sudbury for a back-to-back against Boreal (0-5) on November 16th at 6:00pm and Cambrian (2-3) on November 17th at 1:00pm.
