(London, ON) – The Fanshawe men's volleyball team (8-4, 2nd West) matched up against the Humber Hawks (7-4, 5th West) on Sunday afternoon at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre. Unfortunately for the Falcons, they fell three sets to one in a hard-fought contest.
It was a slow start for Fanshawe, as they found themselves down 5-0 from the jump. Humber maintained the early lead throughout the opening set, closing out the Falcons 25-19 to take a one-set lead.
The second set was as back and forth as it gets, with both teams trading points the entire way until they found themselves even at 25 apiece. Jayden Crowther (London, ON) was a dominant force for Fanshawe, serving as the primary target on attack while also stuffing Hawks attackers in the middle. A block by Tanner Paterson (Baden, ON) gave the Falcons their 27th point and tied the match at 1-1 heading into the third.
The third set was nearly as tightly contested as the second, as neither team was willing to give an inch. Unfortunately for the Falcons, their offence tapered off late in the set as Humber gained momentum through key blocks. Despite a strong effort, Fanshawe dropped the set 25-22.
The fourth set opened with a 4-0 run by Humber before Fanshawe was able to get on the board. The four-point cushion remained in the Hawks' favour as the Falcons pushed for a comeback. However, Humber continued to control the set, extending the lead to 19-13 before a Fanshawe timeout. Coming out of the break, the Falcons were unable to mount a last-ditch comeback and fell 25-15, dropping the match three sets to one.
The Falcons will have a brief break before returning to action at Fanshawe's Falcons Fest on Saturday, January 24, at 8:00 p.m. against Sheridan (2-9, 9th West). Falcons Fest will feature a number of gameday activities and giveaways, including a watch party at Fanshawe's on-campus bar, The Out Back Shack.
